ROCK STAR COUNT
My next actor who played Dracula is Frank Langella. Like Bela
Lugosi, he had played the count on stage and was chosen for the lead in the
1979 version, which also starred Laurence Olivier as Van Helsing.
Unfortunately, Frank’s haircut is somewhat 1970s but nevertheless,
he is undeniably sexy, although one blog describes him thus:
Langella looks like a Beverly Hills hairdresser on his way to the disco. 😂
Den of Geek blog has a great article on the film entitled Celebrating Frank Langella’s Rock Star Count.
This hits the nail on the head. When he strides into the drawing room at
dinner, he throws his cloak at a servant without even looking and sets about
seducing the panties from every woman in the room. (If it had been the 2020
Claes Bang incarnation, it would have been every man in the room too. More on him later).
It seemed Frank took Bela Lugosi’s sophisticated charm and sexed
Dracula right up. But he also showed a vulnerable side to Dracula and stipulated he would only play the role if he didn't have to wear fangs.
It’s a great version that is much overlooked today.
