Main Character's Jobs in My MM Romance Novels

I recently saw something on social media about the occupations of main characters in m/m stories and it got me thinking about my own books. I like to be a bit different, from my locations, to my themes, and my characters jobs are no exception. Although I'm heavily biased towards cops and I daren't count and list all the books here that have a cop in them!

Here's a list of all the occupations I've written about:

Marine biologist

Cruise liner captain

Barrister

Writer

Rent boy

Stripper

Angel

Read an excerpt from Revived, Cold Love Book 4

Don’t you know I’m completely worthless?”

Kanen Kannack lives under the shadow of alcoholism, Alaska, and his feelings for his best friend, chief of police Jamie Allen. He’s never been honest with Jamie as long as he’s known him, but Jamie’s long lost to him, living with Ephram, the love of his life.

When a new arrival in town causes Kanen to lose control in spectacular fashion, long-buried secrets are unearthed, threatening Jamie and Ephram’s happiness and the fragile life Kanen has long clung to.

There was something about Kanen’s obvious power and brooding hostility that appealed dangerously to him.

The 4 Draculas Side by Side

Who's your favourite?

Welcome to Halloween from Whitby - the spooky setting for Beautifully Haunted

Whitby is the setting for some of Dracula, published in 1897 by Bram Stoker. The author visited Whitby and read about real-life villain Vlad the Impaler in the local library. Dracula's ship, The Demeter runs aground on Tate Hill Sands and a huge black dog is seen to leap ashore and run up the 199 steps towards St.Mary's graveyard and the Abbey.

I set my Halloween story, Beautifully Haunted, in Whitby, with scenes at the ruined Abbey and the churchyard.

Spooky Season Dracula Actors # 3: Sir Christopher Lee

BLOOD AND GUTS COUNT

Number four in my actors who have played Dracula series, is the immortal and much beloved Sir Christopher Lee. He was the second actor I saw playing Dracula at a tender age, after Bela Lugosi, and my love for him was cemented instantly.

Spooky Season Dracula Actors #2: Frank Langella

 ROCK STAR COUNT

My next actor who played Dracula is Frank Langella. Like Bela Lugosi, he had played the count on stage and was chosen for the lead in the 1979 version, which also starred Laurence Olivier as Van Helsing.

Unfortunately, Frank’s haircut is somewhat 1970s but nevertheless, he is undeniably sexy, although one blog describes him thus:

Langella looks like a Beverly Hills hairdresser on his way to the disco. 😂

Spooky Season Dracula Actors #1: Bela Lugosi.

 SOPHISTICATED OLD-WOLRD COUNT

As it’s officially spooky season, I’d like to share my love of my most favourite paranormal being ever. Dracula of course. A conversation about the actors who have played Dracula is held between the two MCs in my upcoming Halloween book, Beautifully Haunted. I’m going to be sharing photos of the best actors to have played the immortal Count, plus snippets related to Bram Stoker and Whitby throughout the month of October.

Let’s start with arguably the most famous Dracula of them all – Bela Lugosi.

Out 1 October 2022 - Entangled - Read an excerpt

He’s a cop tangling with the most dangerous man in town…

“As long as he knows the deal, it’s fine. He hates cops, so it should make for some pretty rough scratch-your-back sex.”

Chief of police Jamie Allen is smitten by the new arrival in his remote Alaskan town of Barrow until he realizes Ephram Welles comes with baggage—he’s an ex-con.

Any liaison between them is strictly forbidden. Jamie would be risking his job and reputation if he tangles with a convicted felon.

But Ephram isn’t easy to resist. He’s everywhere Jamie turns, and the mutual chemistry between them is sizzling hot, just waiting to explode. Jamie’s willing to risk everything for just one night of passion with Ephram, but can he stop there?

Opinions are like arseholes. Everybody's got one.

I polarise people and always have. I usually have gushing reviews or awful reviews. I'm a bit like marmite in that way. I must admit that I get a kick out of not conforming to the stereotype of m/m writers.

What I don't write.

Cardboard characters

"Fluff"

Characters behaving as society expects them to

Bland

What I do write:

Fiction.

Emphasis on the fiction. It's make-belief. Because of that, I can write what I want. I can create a character that I want, not one the reader thinks I should. If I want a character to sleep with another even though it would be completely unprofessional, I will. If I want a character to love another character who is a despicable person, I will. If I want to write about a despicable person, then I will. Because there are complicated, contrary and not nice people out there. And they are the reality of this world, not the sweetness and light commonly portrayed in m/m novels.

Dark Themes Throughout My Books and Content Warnings

It has come to my attention that Amazon are banning books based on words mentioned in the author's description of the book. As I sometimes (but not all the time) write dark themes, I believe in being up front with the content of my books and mentioning them in warnings after the blurb.

Example themes in my books:

 2022 PUBLISHING SCHEDULE

17 SEPTEMBER

HIGHLAND FLING (WILDCAT BOOK 1)

I Like to Write Bastards!

I like to write bastards! Especially tall, dark handsome bastards in a suit. It’s more fun to explore and dissect the psyche of someone real and flawed with issues, than a cardboard nice guy. I also like to make them work hard for their redemption. Sometimes that takes more than one book.

Here’s the top 10 bastards I have written.
1. Dexter Summerfield (Uptight American adrift in the UK. Absolutely not gay. Highland Fling and Beautifully Haunted, Wildcat series)
2. Dante Jardine (Bastard in a suit running a den of iniquity. Inferno)
3. Lucifer (Fallen angel. I am Fallen)
4. Matt Harmon (Rich bastard in denial. Rescue Me)

Rainbow Snippets

Rainbow Snippets is a Facebook group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week and share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation.

Here's my 6 sentence snippet for this week from Kanen, Book 4 in the Cold Love series:

Jensen’s hand moved up his arm to rest on his shoulder. He moved right up close to Kanen again. "I didn’t do it so you’re beholden to me," he said in a near whisper, almost drowned out by the ocean. "I did it because I care about you. And you need someone to care about you. You’re floundering."
